Kodus to Leif Häggström for sending me a nice gift, in form a brand new issue of the Swedish archaeological journal Utskrift #10. It’s published by stiftelsen Hallands Länsmuseer, Kulturmiljö Halland (the Foundation Halland County Museums) on archaeology in Halland county and nearby regions. All articles are written in Swedish.
I’ve yet to read this issue, as yet I’ve just skimmed through it. There are several interesting articles including Leif’s articles on Man and animal in Halland 500-1100 AD and Sheep and goat in archaeological records from Halland, Lennart Carlie’s Wood species analysis – a source of knowledge with several dimensions etc.
Then this sojourn in Östersund has come to an end. Well it is as it and now it’s time to find new projects or a new employer. I’ve liked it up here, it’s a nice enough city and my colleagues have been great and i’ve learned a lot- though it will good to be without the constant travels for awhile.
Change is sometimes necessary and I guess now is as a good time as any. Talking about change I thought it was time for the blog to get a facelift – hope you like it. I got a few post from Vienna coming up the coming days so there will be a few pictures from a few museums – unfortunately not from das Pathologisch-anatomisches Bundesmuseum (the Federal Pathologic-anatomical Museum) in Vienna as photographing was not allowed there. I would like to recommend it though – it’s an interesting museum, with several good examples of who disease such as syphilis and tuberculoses etc can leaves marks the skeleton. So if you’re there its well worth a visit.
Don’t have time to write anything here today so check out my Vienna adventures at my wine blog Aqua Vitae (this week I post in English there as well). There you can see a few nice pictures at Schloss Schönbrunn and learn the story behind the name Schwedenplatz (Sweden square).
Is an art museum something for an archaeologist? If they’re anything like das Kunsthistorische Museum in Vienna, – YES they are. This museum holds a large collection of ancient Greek and Roman finds; statues, frescos, ceramics etc, prehistoric finds from Egypt etc. I took a great number of pictures and thought I’d present some of them for you – at a later date I’ll try to do a few more narrative posts of the photos, now I just dived them up in cultures and periods – a perhaps a few comments.
The first rooms are filled with ancient Egyptian finds from the ages of the Pharaohs to roman times. If I’m not mistaken a few ceramic finds might predate the Pharaohs.
A few of the painted vessels just behind the first row are painted pottery that at least highly remains of Neolithic painted pottery from Egypt that I’ve seen such as Naqada.
Today one of my hotmail accounts was shanghaied; fortunately, I found it quickly and was able to regain control of the account. Two spam mails, however, was sent out from my merovingerking account with the title “Hi” – if you happened to get one dispose of it asap.
While I understand why it’s done – so I do hope that karma is real and that the idiots behind this hostile take over gets what’s coming to them, i.e. some kind of digital keel-hauling.
In the immortal word of captain Haddock – ”Thundering herd of zapotecs!” “Two-timing Tartar Twisters!” ” “anfäkta, anamma (Swedish) etc. etc.
…the follow up of the semi-classic movie Swamp thing, the return of Swamp thing. Swamp thing was one of my favourite comic “heroes” in my youth. It was released in 1989 starring Heather Locklear. I have a soft spot for “bad” movies and especially bad movies with actors/actresses that later on got to be famous. The reputation and the trailer gives me no reason to believe I’ve struck gold when I found the film on DVD on sale at the local video shack for a few bucks, but at least I’ve got to kill a some time (84 minutes) in front of the TV.
